Mdm Veenothani, aged 52, has been caring for her 76-year-old mother since her dementia diagnosis in 2021.
Once employed full-time as a data assistant, she transitioned to a part-time data officer role to better balance work and caregiving. Her mother remains mobile and can manage some daily tasks, such as cooking—with Veenothani’s support—but struggles with short-term memory loss and frequently repeats questions.
“There are days she forgets to eat, and that can be tough,” Veenothani shared. “Every day brings new challenges. Our relationship used to be okay, but I do get frustrated when she repeats herself,” she added.
Earlier this year, Veenothani joined Mindfull Community’s Caregiver-to-Caregiver (C2C) education programme for dementia, after discovering it through a Facebook post. The programme helped her feel less isolated and more empowered with practical strategies. “Now I understand her condition better, and I try not to nag. For meals, I keep it simple—just this or that,” she explained.
While Veenothani is at work, her mother stays home alone, monitored by a camera, with occasional visits from a neighbour’s helper. Her two sisters also lend support on weekends.
Widowed since 2019, Veenothani hopes to continue volunteering with Mindfull, offering encouragement and guidance to fellow caregivers navigating similar journeys.
